Here’s How to Solve Glue Retention Issues for Lash Extensions

We’ve all been there—your client comes in for their infill, and you notice only about 30% of their lash extensions are still hanging on. Naturally, you start thinking, Did they follow the aftercare? While aftercare is important, the truth is, good retention is also be down to your technique than what the client does. Let’s break down some key tips to help boost lash retention and avoid those awkward client chats!

Why Proper Prep is Crucial

Great retention starts with solid prep work. Even experienced lash artists sometimes rush through this part, but skipping proper prep can cause big problems later down the line. The natural lashes need to be completely free of oil, makeup, and dirt before you start applying eyelash extensions. A lot of clients don’t realise that some of the serums or creams they use around their eyes can actually affect the bond between their natural lashes and the glue, so it’s your job to clean them off.

Start by giving the lashes a thorough clean with lash shampoo to remove any oils or residue. For an even deeper clean, follow it up with a liquid lash cleanser. A solid cleaning routine ensures that whether you’re applying Classic extensions, Volume lashes, or wispy sets, they’ll stay put much longer.

Don’t Skip the Primer!

After you’ve cleaned the lashes and used a lash cleanser, it’s time to reintroduce a bit of moisture to the lashes. This is where eyelash primer comes in. It hydrates the lashes and preps them for the glue to bond properly. If you skip this step, you might end up with weak bonds, and weak bonds = poor retention. Trust us, it’s worth the extra minute!

Mastering Application Techniques

Now, let’s talk about application because this is where a lot of Lash Techs hit a snag. A common mistake is letting the lash glue dry before the extension even touches the natural lash. If the glue dries too quickly, the bond won’t hold. The trick? Make sure your attachment is quick and smooth—no hesitation!

If you’re still working on your speed, consider using a slower-drying glue. Just be careful not to use too much adhesive because that can cause stickies (yikes), but don’t use too little either, or the bond will be weak. Aim for about 2-3mm of attachment between the extension and the natural lash for the best retention.

Know Your Glue

Your lash glue is a major player when it comes to retention. As lash adhesives contain different ingredients, it's essential to give them a good shake before each use. If you want to make sure you’re doing it perfectly, a Glue Shaker will ensure the adhesive is mixed evenly and to the perfect consistency every time.

Don’t forget to keep your glue nozzle clean with nozzle wipes to prevent blockages. Store your glue in an airtight container to protect it from Ireland’s ever-changing weather (we know how unpredictable it can be!). Also, be sure to replace your glue every 30 days to keep it working at its best.

The Little Details Matter

It’s often the small touches that make a big difference – and by this, we mean tape! Micropore tape and eyelid tape help keep the skin tight during the application, allowing for more precision. Meanwhile, under-eye patches keep your clients comfortable and give you a clearer view of the lash line.

Achieving great lash retention isn’t just about how well your clients care for their lashes afterward. It all starts with how well you prepare—from a deep cleanse with your pretreatment products to applying the right amount of glue. Perfect your technique, and you won’t just improve retention—you’ll build a reputation as a Lash Artist who delivers stunning, long-lasting results every time.
